Happy Birthday Marjorie Weinman Sharmat - November 12

Happy Birthday Marjorie Weinman Sharmat - November 12, 1928

A great way to start off the Marjorie Weinman Sharmat's birthday celebration would be with a pancake breakfast. Our family absolutely loves pancakes and so does Nate the Great. Marjorie Weinman Sharmat has written well over 100 books and arguably her most popular books come from the Nate the Great series. Nate the Great is a young detective that solves mysteries and eats lots of pancakes. I would encourage your family to try a pancake recipe from The Sneaky Chef cookbooks.

As a teacher, I took the opportunity when Sharmat's birthday came around to have my students do a book report. Each student was able to read a different book since there are many  Nate the Great titles available. I presented a book packet that had activities and graphic organizers for them to complete during and after their reading of a Nate the Great book. Click here to download a copy of the packet. Try using this packet with younger readers by completing it along with them.

I would prefer to think about Thanksgiving right now, even though every retail store is thinking about Christmas. I was at the library this week and I found a Nate the Great book called Nate the Great Talks Turkey. The book does not take place around the time Thanksgiving, but it is about a missing turkey that Nate the Great, his friends, Sludge (his dog), and Olivia Sharp try to find. Olivia Sharp is Nate the Great's cousin that now has her own series of books. They might be well received by the young girl readers out there.

There are other holiday Nate the Great titles that may be used to celebrate Sharmat's birthday. There is Nate the Great and the Halloween Hunt and Nate the Great and the Crunchy Christmas.

She has also written another Thanksgiving story called One Terrific Thanksgiving. Our local library didn't carry the book and it appears to be out of print. However, Amazon.com and Alibris.com have used copies available.

Enjoy reading some good mysteries and eat lots of pancakes!

  1. I have recently been drawn back to Nate the Great stories (way too focused on PBs this year!), firstly because I am a big fan of Marc Simont, but I am really enjoying the writing, the characters, and a pancake here and there too! Happy Birthday Marjorie!
